As the oldest university in the English-speaking world, Oxford is a unique and historic institution. There is no clear date of foundation, but teaching existed at Oxford in some form in and developed rapidly from , when Henry II banned English students from attending the University of Paris. In , the historian, Gerald of Wales, gave a public reading to the assembled Oxford dons and in around the arrival of Emo of Friesland, the first known overseas student, set in motion the University’s tradition of international scholarly links.

By , the University was headed by a magister scholarum Oxonie , on whom the title of Chancellor was conferred in , and in the masters were recognised as a universitas or corporation. In the 13th century, rioting between town and gown townspeople and students hastened the establishment of primitive halls of residence. These were succeeded by the first of Oxford’s colleges, which began as medieval ‘halls of residence’ or endowed houses under the supervision of a Master.

University, Balliol and Merton Colleges, which were established between and , are the oldest. Less than a century later, Oxford had achieved eminence above every other seat of learning in the country, and had won the praises of popes, kings and sages by virtue of its antiquity, curriculum, doctrine and privileges.

In , Edward III paid tribute to the University for its invaluable contribution to learning; he also commented on the services rendered to the state by distinguished Oxford graduates. From its early days, Oxford was a centre for lively controversy, with scholars involved in religious and political disputes. John Wyclif, a 14th-century Master of Balliol, campaigned for a Bible in the vernacular, against the wishes of the papacy.

Mitchell, who will be 72 in June, was chair of Princeton’s English Department, when Cameron took his classes during her sophomore year five years ago, The New York Post reports. Lee was little more than a stranger to me then, but he captivated me with his brilliance, sensitivity, and passion.

After travelling to Oxford to study there Cameron said she was ‘surprised’ at how much she still thought of Mitchell, who is currently on academic sabbatical from Princeton. The couple are thought to have two sons, aged 21 and She spoke of the family splitting its time between Boston and New Jersey and spending their summers in Maine.

As an essayist, broadcaster and public speaker, Professor Hussey communicates this research far beyond academic audiences to reach a general public through his engagement with French and North African culture and its relation to the English-speaking world. His work has led to debate about the contemporary significance of French and North African cultures in the 21st century. It has had a largely positive critical reception, but has also been attacked for promoting a pessimistic view of present and future conflicts and the relative failure of counter-terrorism in Europe.

Notwithstanding translations into other languages and countries are underway — including France where the book in English has already sparked fierce debate. Its significance is that it resurrects the experience of Romanian Jews in s French-speaking Romania.

They replaced the former University of Paris , one of the archetypal European universities, founded about The medieval University of Paris grew out of the cathedral schools of Notre-Dame and, like most other medieval universities, was a kind of corporate company that included both professors and students. With papal support, Paris soon became the great transalpine centre of Christian orthodox theological teaching. At the end of the 13th and during the 14th centuries, it was the most celebrated teaching centre of all Christendom.

Its famous professors included Alexander of Hales , St. Bonaventure, Albertus Magnus, and Thomas Aquinas. In the faculty of arts, the trivium grammar, rhetoric , and dialectic and the quadrivium arithmetic, geometry , astronomy , and music were taught together with general scientific, literary, and general culture. Aristotelian philosophy was an especially important field of study in the arts faculty. Each faculty was headed by a dean, and the dean of the faculty of arts had by the 14th century become the head of the collective university under the title of rector.

Many colleges were built to accommodate the students. The most celebrated was the Sorbonne , founded by the theologian Robert de Sorbon about Because its halls were the scene of numerous theological disputations, the name Sorbonne became a popular term for the theological faculty of Paris. The University of Paris remained a spokesman for Roman Catholic orthodoxy, and its educational program, which was founded on scholastic dialectics, became rigidly fixed.

She’s blatantly honest, and she can be downright mean. Warm and fuzzy aren’t exactly her personality type. Yet, she does find a good friend in Rory Alexis Bledel , even if they did have a rocky start to their friendship. Paris worked hard at both Chilton and Yale to be the best of the best; anything less than percent is unacceptable in her book. She has no time for incompetence, anxiety or nerves, and she’s not the one to go to when you’re having a bad day, unless you want to make it worse.

Yet, she has a certain charm about her that makes us love her; despite being a mean and even downright scary human being, she still has her moments of genuine kindness or humor With that said, here are Paris’s 10 most badass quotes that we give permission for you to reuse. Paris isn’t afraid of inducing hardcore cruelty even to complete strangers. Even a simple question may result in a ferocious insult.
